Formation of a new viral type is considered to be antigenic shift; small changes in an individual RNA segment in flu viruses are termed antigenic drift and result in minor changes in the virus.
However, these can accumulate over time to produce enough minor changes that cumulatively change the virus' antigenic makeup over time (usually years). There could be many different types of flu viruses out there; its just that the declared Swine Flu is prevalent and more potent at this time.
From what we found, a person that was sick with Influenza, say about 10 years ago, infected other people around him and that strain got passed around from year to year over a period of years, and that strain of viral infection mutated to the point of creating a new formation of the virus.
Now in the year 2009, the human race is unable to diagnose it until someone dies from it and we cannot contain it until it can be diagnosed. See the dilemma? There is no medical cure. Not even the flu vaccination can prevent it. Nor can any amount of antiviral medication that your doctor can give you.
Typically found in pigs, swine influenza is caused by influenza type A viruses and is an acute respiratory illness that causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. While swine flu does not normally infect humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately one human swine influenza virus infection every one to two years in the United States -- from December 2005 through February 2009, 12 cases of human infection with swine influenza were reported.
