Overview

2009 H1N1 referred to as swine flu is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

In the spring of 2009, cases of human infection with H1N1 flu were confirmed in Mexico and in several states in the United States. Cases of infection in humans were also reported in other countries.

During a June 11 news conference, Margaret Chan, M.D., director of the World Health Organization (WHO), cited the nearly 30,000 confirmed swine flu cases reported in 74 countries when she raised the alert level from phase 5 to phase 6 which is the highest possible.

The WHO has declared swine flu to be a global pandemic; the first time it has used that designation in 41 years. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization signaled that a pandemic of 2009 H1N1 flu was underway.

Swine influenza is flu virus usually found in pigs. The virus occasionally changes (mutates) and becomes infectious in humans. This means the virus has the potentiality to spread quickly around the world. It may also be more difficult to treat than the usual, seasonal human flu viruses. NEXT
